And he say that when one established great power is threatened by another, you usually get... get a war. And he calls this the Thucydides Trap, because in Thucydides' history, one book is called the history, you know, Peloponnesian Way. He says a big cause of the war was that Sparta was feeling threatened by Athens' rise. Okay, but the reason this is annoying is because,

look, I'm not going to read that book or other book like it. Life is very short to read such book, but... So maybe I miss special insights that this apparatchik Ellison has, but there is something common sense can tell you, that when one power is rising, another big one is established, you might get war. A small child can predict this. So why you need to put names Thucydides on it? Thucydides' trap to sound, you know. So Bannon speak of this in context of China, and how the establishment zoglings like Graham Allison, who, by using this concept of Thucydides' trap, they mean to say that China is rising, United States is declining dominant power, and the trap, or in other words, war, must be avoided at all costs.

So now for those who need a quick refresher on what all this mean and whose Thucydides was, he was Greek general during Peloponnesian War, the second part of the 400s BC. A great multi-decade war between Athens and Sparta that broke out after the Greeks defeated the Persians in the 480s and 470s, although in reality skirmishes and minor battles against West Persia continued after that, in many ways indefinitely after that. But in the wake of the victory over the Persians, the Greeks no longer had great external enemies, so they turned on each other. And so it was Athens, the democracy, versus Sparta, the aristocracy, fighting for a hegemony over the Greek world.

And in reality, this meant a huge part of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea and such. And Thucydides was Athenian general of half-Thracian descent. The Thracians, you know, live in modern Bulgaria, that region, and they were a barbarian tribe with red hair, primarily. And he wrote a great history book, considered sometime the second history book after Herodotus, or by some it's considered the first real history book because they say Herodotus is still a mythologer. But in any case, it's very different from Herodotus, who I've talked about a lot more before both on this show and on my account, and I always tell people, I recommend you read Herodotus, because I think overall he has, well, first of all, he's less done.

If you're interested, you can read this almost as a standalone in Book 3 of Thucydides, basically chapter 69 to about 84. And do not worry about translation. You can just assume all translations of Thucydides are, at best, renditions. Thucydides was very hard to read, even for native Greek speakers. He's a very mysterious writer. For example, you have commentaries on Thucydides by people like Dionysius of Halicarnassus. This man Dionysius was simply a writer, a commentator, who lived much later than Thucydides, four hundred years after him. So let's say Thucydides lived 400 BC, this commenter lived 1st century BC, right before birth of Christ, but he was a very deep student of ethnic Greek style, Dionysius of Halicarnassus,

and yet he sometimes admits he doesn't understand Thucydides, what he's saying, his language, his grammar. He has paragraphs very hard to parse, he's very dense. So there aren't any really great translations, but you should read it anyway. Thomas Hobbes has a translation, and you can see these sections stand alone, especially chapters 80 onward of book 3, which I will read for a bit on you here, but the general context is, so this book about conflict between Athens and Sparta, but really it became a war within the entire Greek world. Almost every Greek city and state was touched by it because each city had a faction of the people and a faction of the rich or of the oligarchs, or the aristocrats in some cases, the many versus the few.

And each Greek city was divided this way and these were at odds in great conflict and with coming of the war between Sparta and Athens, they could each call on one hegemon or the other for help. So, for example, in Korsaira, the popular faction called on Athens, and the oligarchic faction called on Sparta and Corinth, and both sent reinforcements. But you can see how this same thing would happen in almost every Greek city, where these latent political rivalries in vendetta with each other. The Greek word for this, neikos, is the same as the Norse word nade. It's very old Indo-European, same thing, blood-fueled. But this strong blood-fueled between almost the oligarchic party and the popular party in every Greek city, you could say.

So let me just say here that this is why I think along with some very few others that in fact what Sousa Didi is describing and what Peloponnesian War really is, is not about rising power versus declining power, is not about balance of power, is not about series of realism in international relations or any such thing. You see this in many famous parts of Suseidides' book, but most of all in Revolution on Corcyra.

And then some others take the extra step of saying, well, this is actually an example of a re-evaluation of values, of what Nietzsche means when he talks about this, how a class or a religion, or in this case, as they would have it, an event, a war, how it manages to upturn the previous morality and change it. So I think this is all wrong. Thucydides says much more than this. He says what I just tell you, that words are in fact worthless, abstractions are worthless. Even in peace, these things, justice, morality, religion, are artifices of men, not only to hide this lust for power, but somehow to screw it in place, to make it such that a priestly
